So what is a peaberry?
A rare bean with big flavor…
Peaberry coffee is a rare and naturally occurring variation of the coffee bean that stands out for its unique shape and bold taste. Found in only 1–10% of coffee cherries (depending on the varietal), peaberries have sparked curiosity and admiration among specialty coffee enthusiasts around the world (even though they were often discarded for their abnormalities until the 1990s)!
… a special development process…
In a typical coffee cherry, two seeds (what we call coffee beans) grow side by side. These seeds are flat on one side due to the way they press against each other.
A peaberry (also known as a “caracol” which is Spanish for snail), forms when only one seed develops inside the cherry. Without a second seed to flatten against, it grows into a rounder, denser shape—like a small pea. This natural mutation, and smaller size, allow peaberries to be separate during sorting, and due to their unique form, peaberries require separate roasting to bring out their best qualities. It is thought that the single seed is granted atypical resources by the plant, and that round shape allows for a more even roast, combining for an exceptional tasting experience.
… creating a unique profile…
Peaberry coffee is often beloved for its distinctive flavor, typically described as:
Bright and vibrant – with citrus or fruit-forward acidity
Full-bodied – offering a richer, more rounded mouthfeel
Exceptionally smooth – with a clean finish and fewer bitter notes
However, there are non-believers who think the taste differences are due to the extra care which the high priced beans typically receive. Like any coffee, even after starting with identical beans, the final taste is influenced by a variety of factors including its processing, roast quality, and brewing method. You will have to taste for yourself to find out which camp you are in!
